ABOUT THE HEATWAVE

A different kind
of heatwave.

Not a weather event. A growing wave of evidence, imagination and community agency for a hotter world.

01 / WHY THIS EXISTS

Heat is physical. Cooling is social.

Two homes on the same street can experience heat very differently. So can two bodies in the same room.

Income, health, housing, work, care, energy, design and public space all shape who can stay comfortable and safe.

The HEATWAVE exists to create space between recognising a problem and rushing towards a solution.

02 / OUR OPERATING PRINCIPLES

01

Start with experience

People living with heat are not an audience. They are knowledge holders and co-designers.

02

Use evidence, widely

Measurements matter. So do memories, routines, observations and local building knowledge.

03

Keep options open

Active and passive cooling belong in the same conversation. So do behaviour, policy and public space.

04

Make ideas moveable

A useful idea should be clear enough to discuss, challenge, adapt and take somewhere next.

05

Be honest about uncertainty

We will not know everything before we begin. Learning is part of the work.

06

Leave capability behind

The process should strengthen people’s ability to ask better questions after the session ends.
